The UK Excellence Award is one of the highest accolades any organisation in the UK can achieve. Launched in 1994, the award recognises organisations which have demonstrated excellence in all areas of operation.

There are three award categories:

  • One for large private/public sector organisations
  • One for SME/small public organisations
  • One for Third Sector/Not-for-Profit organisations

Each category has equal award status.
All applicants are assessed against the EFQM Excellence Model which provides a structured pathway for improving business performance – identifying key strengths and areas for improvement.

How to apply?

There are two application routes:

  • Established Award route
  • Enhanced Recognised for Excellence (ER4E) route

Application Criteria

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of performance against the excellence model criteria through e.g. previous external assessments, the submission document should comply with any restrictions defined for the document e.g. page count willingness to host an assessor team for the agreed duration of the visit.

2019 Award Winners

WINNER 1 – Third Sector/Not for Profit:
Phoenix Futures

Phoenix Futures is a charity that helps anyone affected by problematic drug and alcohol use. Phoenix Futures provides 138 services across England and Scotland in community, prison and residential settings. Their focus is, and will always be, on the individual.

Between 2015 and 2016 they helped 23,650 people take their first step into recovery and to rebuild their lives. Of this number, 787 people were helped by their residential and housing services, 16,802 people were helped by their community services, and 732 were helped by their prison services.

WINNER 2 – Large Private Sector:
National Express

National Express is a British multinational public transport company headquartered in Birmingham that operates bus, coach, train and tram services in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Malta, Germany, Bahrain and Morocco and long-distance coach services across Europe.

National Express hold the largest market share for long haul coach transport in both Spain and the UK, and are the second largest school bus provider in North America.
