CEO of McFarlane Telfer Ltd
“I’ve found BQF to be a great source of ideas, guidance and motivation, not just for myself but for our leadership team – juniors as much as seniors – and it’s a genuine pleasure to help spread that message.”
Chris started his career in hospitality, working in restaurants and hotels before, after 10 years, switching to the supply side on his own account, running a team of technicians providing commercial kitchen maintenance.
As owner/manager of a small business aspiring to work for globally-recognised names, Chris realised early on that credibility and proof of competence were going to be vital. A novice to the field of quality systems and daunted by initial cumbersome implementations of BS5750, Chris joined the fray with the 2000 release of ISO9001 – and the business was accredited in 2002, whetting the appetite for standards, going on to add 14001 and 18001 in 2008. Joining the BQF and going for EFQM R4E was the next stage – along the way lighting the ambition to help spread the Excellence message around more SME’s.
As the business has grown, now with branches in Dubai and Qatar, the need for continuous re-appraisal has become more important – as well as the challenge of reconciling Human Factors with increasing use of technology – both fields of continuing interest.
Chris has judged for both the BQF and the CQI Awards – always a privilege and a learning experience.

“I am very excited to join the BQF jury again as this will give me another wonderful opportunity to see in detail the fantastic work some leading UK organisations are undertaking to provide excellence in their businesses and the services they offer. The EFQM model is such a great tool for evaluating success and identifying improvement opportunities that I am convinced it’s sustained use will drive the provision of an outstanding customer experience and commercial success. I look forward to hearing all the success stories from the finalists about how they maximised value from the EFQM model using the great support of the BQF”
