Innovation in Diversity and Equality Award
This is a brand new award for BQF introduced to celebrate those organisations who champion equality, diversity and human rights every day. They have a strong ethos of ‘opportunity for all’ giving every individual a chance to achieve their potential, free from prejudice and discrimination.
Because you value your people and all your stakeholders. This is a great opportunity for you to demonstrate and showcase the benefits to your organisation of having forward looking policies and programmes embedded within your culture, as standard.
How to apply?
Entry is simple – by completion of an online application form and submission of supporting evidence.
The judges will be looking for examples of initiatives that demonstrate an organisations equality and diversity culture. Or innovative ways in which Diversity and Equality are managed and applied within your organisation which could be held up as examples to others and of which you are proud of the achievements. Tangible and demonstrable results of the initiative’s success will also be evidenced.

Jo is the Head of Inclusive Resourcing at Equal Approach, a specialist and leading inclusive recruiter, diversity consultancy and training provider, supporting organisations to attract, recruit, recognise, retain and promote diverse talent, and make workplaces more inclusive.
Jo is responsible for establishing, building and maintaining relationships with clients and diverse candidates, whilst managing the inclusive resourcing team and operations.
Jo has achieved a BA (Hons) degree in Communications and a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, and she is a Fellow of the Institute of Recruitment Professionals.
Prior to joining Equal Approach, Jo previously held a number of senior roles within the recruitment industry, including as a Business Manager at Pertemps for over 11 years, where she was responsible for providing strategic leadership.
Johan van den Broek
Lead Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) at House of Commons
“I believe that my current role as HR Business Partner, my experience as Quality Manager and knowledge of the EFQM framework as well as my diverse background make me ideal to judge this category.”
As HR Business Partner (HRBP), Johan works at a strategic level providing proactive and internal consultant advice as well as ‘critical friend’ challenges to senior leaders in his assigned business areas. During his time as HRBP Johan has advised and supported most business areas of the House.
Johan provides and brokers expert advice in the areas of HR Management, Learning & Development, Diversity & Inclusion, Reward & Employee Relations and Policy as well as Organisation Design, Development and Change.
Johan contributes to House-wide projects and programmes, most recently leading on a review of the Business Partner Models in the House. As Lead HRBP he line-manages a team of 5 HRBPs.
Johan has worked in the House since 2000, starting off in the Refreshment Department as Personnel Manager. In 2008 he was appointed as Head of HR to the newly formed Department of Facilities and from 2009 worked as Quality Manager on a Transformation Programme. In this role Johan led on the first ever R4E assessments against the EFQM framework (in 2011 and 2013), achieving 4-star in both assessments, whilst pioneering the HR Business Partner model from 2012.
Prior to his time at the House, Johan spent 12 years working in hotels in a variety of management positions.
Strategic Program Manager, Smiths Excellence System at Smiths Medical

As such, I am very much looking forward to reviewing and learning from the great examples of excellence in this area that can help inspire me and my organisation.”
Ben, former professional actor and writer, is a Global strategist and programme manager for Smiths Medical, a division of Smiths Group PLC.
Ben has previously been responsible for the development and delivery of a diverse range of cross functional initiatives that supported large-scale business transformation and change. Programmes included operating model consolidation, organisational restructuring, M&A integration/transition, product development, and digital application development.
He is now currently responsible for leading the implementation of the ‘Smiths Excellence System’ (SES) in Smiths Medical. SES is focused on driving Excellence across the Smiths Divisions, and working in a more consistent, standardised way that drives better speed, efficiency and high-quality execution.
Ben is also currently serving (1 year) as co-chair of Smiths Medical’s UK Diversity & Equality network, which aims to develop ideas, strategies, and programmes to attract, develop, and retain a diverse workforce to better drive company goals.
He is also currently serving (3 years) as the Global co-chair of the Smiths Medical ‘Ambassador’ network (~125 employees), who act as employee engagement champions and change agents for the business.

When is entry deadline?
Entry deadlines for the Innovation, Lean Six Sigma and Leadership awards are all on the 31st of October.
Can I get a discount?
BQF Members are eligible for up to 30% discount dependent on how many entries they make.
Innovation Awards: Charities, charitable trusts or not-for-profit organisations are eligible for the discounted rate of £150 plus VAT.
