Marks & Spencer’s Plan A is one of the most well-known sustainability programmes in UK business,

When it launched in 2007 it outlined 100 commitments spanning the themes of climate change, waste, sustainable raw materials, fair partnership and health. By 2012, the retailer aimed to become carbon neutral, send no waste to landfill, extend sustainable sourcing, help improve the lives of people in their supply chain and support customers and employees to live a healthier lifestyle.

The sheer scale and ambition of the plan was lauded by environmental groups, with Greenpeace UK describing it as the most comprehensive sustainability programme by a British supermarket. But four years in, what has Plan A achieved?
