Paul, I would bet that the 100m race has been exactly the same for as long as the event has been around. As my father famously advised me in track: all you have to do is "Run fast, Turn left". He also would tell me "Get out of the blogs first, and don't let anyone pass you!" Never failed... when I could do it!

The innovation in sports is the technology and the ever-more-detailed refinement of technique. It's much more like the Six Sigma system than innovation.

Paul,

In your posting above, you write, for example, that “If T & D tried anything really innovative, like jet powered skates, the judges would ban it.”

Following up on your thoughts, I came to think of an idea for the next Winter Olympics: How about letting the audience, who watch the ice-skating competition in the stadium and/or on the Internet, participate in giving points for performances – for example through sms? Perhaps such an initiative would encourage competition participants and their coaches to think even more innovatively when preparing for the competition. You could probably also involve the audience in other ways.

In addition, how about inviting a band to play the music that the participants in the ice-skating competition use for their ice-skating programs?

Just a couple of further thoughts. Hope you can use some of them.

Regards, Frank
