Tulip Mental Health Group was founded in 1988 by a consortium of local voluntary and statutory groups in the London Borough of Haringey. Since then, the organisation's main objective has been to promote the preservation and safeguarding of mental health. Its mission is to provide quality services, which offer hope to service users and support their recovery.
Tulip's application for Committed to Excellence (C2E) was driven by their desire to take on a challenge. The organisation also saw the programme as an opportunity that would focus improvement, whilst also providing a form of accreditation.
Prior to this Tulip had not used the EFQM Excellence Model. However, since implementing improvement projects that form the basis of C2E, it has experienced a number of benefits. Since applying the Model, Tulip has reported a noticeable increase in the sense of teamwork experienced by its employees. As a result, the organisation's internal communications have also noticeably improved as has the process of collecting and reporting performance results.
Throughout the process of achieving their C2E status, the biggest challenge that Tulip faced was gaining and convincing staff to engage in using the Model. In the early stages of the process, front line staff proved hesitant in their participation.
Whilst working for their C2E status, Tulip was specifically impressed by the great level of understanding that its BQF assessor expressed regarding the workings of the organisation. Consequently, the assessor's feedback report proved very useful in aiding Tulip's focus on future improvements to place them in a competitive position.
'We saw reaching C2E status as a brilliant opportunity for a challenge. By improving our teamwork strategies during the process, we have successfully managed to develop our internal communications, which has vastly enhanced our business ethic, ensuring a far more competitive positioning in this sector.'
