UK Excellence Award - 2011 Winners and Finalists

The UK Excellence Award is one of the highest accolades any organisation in the UK can achieve - it recognises organisations which have demonstrated excellence in all areas of operation.

Bishop Burton College2011 Winner: Bishop Burton College

Bishop Burton College is a specialist land-based college offering courses supporting the Agriculture, Animal Management, Countryside, Horticulture and Equine industries from entry level and schools up to university level.

The College is a truly inspirational place, due in no small part to the visionary leadership of the Principal Jeanette Dawson. The continuous improvement culture that is all pervasive across the College, coupled with the ‘Freedom within a Framework' mantra, encourages everyone to be innovative and creative, and therefore to be a key driver of the College's long-term success.

‘The whole process [of entering the Award] has invigorated us and created a genuine buzz about the place. The EFQM Excellence Model offers a workable frame on which you can pin sound business theories, efficient processes and coherent values.'
Jeanette Dawson, Bishop Burton College, Principal

St Anne's Primary School2011 Winner: St Anne's Primary School

St Anne's Primary School is a co-educational, Catholic Maintained Primary School located in Derry City, Northern Ireland, which opened in 1972 and caters for pupils in 4-11 age range. The school has always aimed for and achieved the high regard of the local community in educational excellence, and has a pro-active culture of self-evaluation and continuous improvement.

The school sees itself as a leader in education, and this pride permeates the entire school community. It strives for excellence in meeting the needs of all pupils and parents, and as a direct result it attracts customers, not only from the local community, but also from the wider Derry area and beyond.

‘Teaching is ultimately a caring profession, and we go the extra mile to make a difference to our pupils' lives.'
Jacinta Bradley, Principal, St Anne's Primary School

Siemens2011 Winner: Siemens Industry Automation & Drive Technologies (IA&DT)

IA&DT has operated in the UK for over 30 years, and supplies electrical automation, control and drive equipment to manufacturing and process industries. Its entire ‘raison d'être' is to provide integrated products and project services to customers in ways that add value and fulfil their operations needs.

The ‘Power of One' strategy pervades everything, and there is clear and inspirational leadership from the MD and the senior management team. Strong leadership and accountability cascades from the Senior Management team down to the wider management group, who were critical to the development of the Vision and Mission and who also effectively role model them.

'This award coincides with our best year's financial results ever, so if anybody was still in any doubt that business excellence improves your company's performance, this is very hard evidence for you.'
Juergen Maier, Managing Director, Siemens UK Industry Sector
